About Dept of Statistics
The Dept of Statistics provides students receive a lot of individual attention throughout the course. Every student will be provided with a computer and has easy access to statistical software’s SAS, SPSS, STATA, SYSTAT and EPI INFO & R. The M.Sc Biostatistics programme provides exposure to the process of statistical consultation. By the end of this course, students acquire enough experience to do statistical consultation independently.

Research
Research interests in the Department of Statistics at Manipal University are similarly widespread like genetics, nuclear science, biomedical, etc. The research environment in the department is vibrant with an active community of PhD students, excellent library, computing and other research support facilities and sustained programmes of research seminars, workshops and international visitors. Faculty and students participate in research activities of other departments or institutions under the University through the Statistical Consulting.

Careers/Placements
Biostatistics deals with the application of statistical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, dentistry, genetics, nursing and public health, and the development of new tools to study these areas. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the field of biostatistics has become an indispensable tool in health science research.

By developing new quantitative methods, characterising underlying theory and marking innovative applications to substantive and demanding scientific problems, biostatisticians play a leading role in the advancement of biomedical, pharmaceutical and public health research. Demand for expertise in biostatistics continues to be high in academia and in the public and private sectors, particularly in settings, emphasizing research in pharmaceutical and biotechnology.
